Hickory Crawdads News Release

Salisbury, MD - The Hickory Crawdads saw the return of All-Star pitcher Luis Ortiz Tuesday night but it wasn't enough to prevent another loss, as the 'Dads dropped their fourth straight game against the Delmarva Shorebirds with a 6-3 defeat at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Ortiz appeared on the mound for the Crawdads for the first time since June 15th, with the 2014 1st round draft pick allowing one run on a pair of doubles in his one inning of work. A struggling Hickory offense came to life early with single runs in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th frames to put the 'Dads ahead 3-2, but a 4-run, 5th inning by Delmarva put the club behind for good in the eventual 6-3 defeat.

The Shorebirds stuck for the first run of the night in the 1st when leadoff batter Steve Wilkerson doubled to right off of Ortiz and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Logan Uxa for a 1-0 'Birds lead. The Crawdads answered in the top of the 2nd, with an RBI ground out from Michael De Leon bringing home Jairo Beras the tie the score at 1-1.

The 'Dads jumped ahead in the next frame when the rehabbing Jurickson Profar lined a solo home run to right for his first long ball since coming to Hickory and a 2-1 Crawdads lead. The 'Birds responded in kind in the bottom of the 3rd however, with a solo shot off the right field foul pole by Logan Uxa to once again deadlock the game at 2-2.

Hickory took their final lead of the game in the 4th, with a 2-out, RBI single to center from Eduard Pinto driving home De Leon and putting the 'Dads on top 3-2. The advantage lasted until the bottom of the 5th, when Delmarva erupted for four runs on three hits and two walks against Crawdads reliever Yohander Mendez to take a 6-3 lead.

The 'Dads had one last opportunity to rally in the 7th with a leadoff single by De Leon and a Shorebirds fielding error allowing Pinto to reach, but Delmarva reliever Tanner Chleborad retired the next three batters to end the inning before putting up zeros in both the 8th and 9th to finish off the game.

Shorebirds bullpen arm Nigel Nootbaar (4-2) earned the win with two perfect innings including two strikeouts, while Chleborad (1) picked up the save after throwing three shutout frames. Mendez (3-3) took the loss for the 'Dads after allowing five runs on five hits, two walks, and 4 Ks during his 3.1 frames on the mound.

Both Luke Tendler and Beras finished the game 2-4, while De Leon went 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Crawdads (77-55/33-31) will try to salvage the fifth and final game of their series versus the Shorebirds (68-64/35-29) on Wednesday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
