West Virginia Black Bears News Release
GRANVILLE, W.V. - WV Black Bears' LF Clark Eagan went 3-for-4 with a run scored and starter RHP Danny Beddes earned his first win of the year, at Monongalia County Ballpark on Friday night, to guide West Virginia to a 5-2 victory over the Auburn Doubledays. Auburn starter RHP A.J. Bogucki took the loss allowing three earned runs on six hits over three innings.
Auburn took an early lead in the top of the second inning as 2B Jake Noll's two out RBI single gave the Doubledays a 1-0 lead. From that point onward, Beddes would find a groove shutting out Auburn for the next four innings. The 2016 15thround draft pick threw six innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out five batters.
West Virginia would respond in the bottom of the second inning to back Beddes' excellent outing. Five hits, highlighted by a two RBI triple from RF Ty Moore down the right field line and 2B Kevin Mahala's infield single gave the Black Bears a 3-1 lead.
The Black Bears would pull away in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-run home run from 3B Hunter Owen increasing Auburn's deficit to 5-1. A 25th round pick in 2016, Owen went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Reliever RHP Scooter Hightower entered in the seventh inning for West Virginia and threw a scoreless frame before allowing an earned run in the eighth on Noll's second RBI single of the night to cut the Black Bears' lead to 5-2. For the final frame, the Black Bears would once again go to the bullpen as RHP Juan Paula recorded his first save of the year retiring the Doubledays in order.
For Auburn, Noll paced the ten-hit attack going 3-for-4 with two RBI while relievers RHP Kyle Simonds and RHP Phil Morse combined to shutout West Virginia for the final 3.1 innings. Black Bears' 2B Kevin Mahala also had two hits in the contest to increase his season batting average to .313.
West Virginia (13-15) and Auburn (14-14) will play the final contest of the three game set tomorrow night at 7:05 PM from Monongalia County Ballpark on Ghostbusters Jersey Night.
