Tigers Scuffle in 10-2 Setback

TROY- NY - The Connecticut Tigers (17-11) lost 10-2 to the Tri-City ValleyCats, affiliate of the Houston Astros, on Friday night at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

The ValleyCats kicked off the ballgame with three runs in the first inning off Connecticut starter Locke St. John. Ryne Birk kicked off the scoring with a solo shot out to right field, his third home run of the season. Ronnie Dawson added to the scoring with a two-run double down the right field line.

St. John would settle in as he tossed three straight scoreless frames but in the fifth inning ran into trouble. With the bases-loaded and two outs, St. John gave up a two-run single to Jake Rogers that spelled the end of the night for St. John and made it 5-0 ValleyCats.

For the Tigers had multiple chances to score in the second and sixth innings. In both frames the Tigers put runners at first and second to open the inning. But in both instances the Tigers were unable to bring in a run.

The ValleyCats piled on in the sixth inning with a four-run frame. The innings was highlighted by a RBI triple from Randy Cesar, who has reached base in his last eight at bats.

The Tigers bats came alive in the eighth inning with a four-hit inning that resulted in two runs. Joey Havrilak ripped an RBI double to get the Tigers on the board for the first time in the series. Blaise Salter produced an RBI single to centerfield to make it a 9-2 game.

John Schreiber was a bright spot out of the bullpen for Connecticut, pitching 1.2 innings, zero hits, zero runs and struck out three.

The loss ensures that the Tigers cannot win their sixth consecutive series in a row. Instead, the Tigers will look to salvage the series tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. against Tri-City.
