Doubledays Fall Short to Black Bears

The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost to the West Virginia Black Bears for the second straight night, 5-2, on Friday from Morgantown, West Virginia. The Doubledays outhit the Black Bears, 10-9, but Auburn only collected two hits with runners in scoring position.

The Doubledays (14-14) scored first in the top of the second inning. With one out, Tres Barrera doubled. Barrera then advanced to third base on a Ryan Ripken ground out to second. Jake Noll followed with a base hit to center field to score Barrera and give Auburn a 1-0 lead.

The Black Bears (13-15) responded in the bottom half of the second inning. Hunter Owen led off with a single. Clark Eagan then doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Ty Moore followed with a two-run triple down the right-field line to score both Owen and Eagan, giving West Virginia its first lead of the game, 2-1. Kevin Mahala then singled to score Moore and put the Black Bears up by two, 3-1.

West Virginia would add to its lead in the fifth inning. With one out, Matt Diorio worked a walk. Hunter Owen followed with a two-run home run to left field, which gave the Black Bears a 5-1 lead.

Auburn cut into West Virginia's lead in the eighth inning. Sheldon Neuse led off with a single. Nick Banks then reached on an error to put runners on first and second base with no outs. With Barrera batting, a wild pitch allowed Neuse to advance to third base. Barrera popped out to first base for the first out of the inning. Ripken then popped out to shortstop for out number two. Noll followed with his second RBI of the game on a single to center field to score Neuse and cut the Black Bears lead to three, 5-2. That's as close as the Doubledays would get though.

The Doubledays and Black Bears finish their three-game series Saturday night from Monongalia County Ballpark in Morgantown, West Virginia. Left-hander Yonathan Ramirez will pitch for Auburn against West Virginia left-hander Cam Vieaux. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
