BURLINGTON, VT --- The Vermont Lake Monsters used four first-inning runs and five solid innings from starter Dakota Chalmers to beat the Williamsport Crosscutters 6-3 in New York-Penn League action Friday night at historic Centennial Field.

After scoring just seven first-inning runs in their first 27 games, the Lake Monsters struck four times on four hits in the first on Friday. The runs scored on a Miguel Mercedes RBI groundout, Eric Marinez RBI single, Eli White RBI double and a Jhonny Rodriguez sacrifice fly.

Chalmers (4-1) allowed just one run on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts over the first five innings to earn his fourth win of the season. The Crosscutters ony run off Chalmers came in the third as Juan Luis led off with a triple and scored on a David Martinelli RBI single.

Vermont added a run in the fourth on a Mercedes two-out single to center before Williamsport used three walks and an infield single to score twice in the sixth.

But with the tying runs in scoring position, Will Gilbert came on to get the final out of the sixth to keep the Vemont lead at 5-3 and tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings, while Nolan Blackwood a scoreless ninth for his third save.

The Lake Monsters added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from White, who was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI base hits on the night.

Starter Julian Garcia (0-2) allowed five runs on five hits with four walks and a strikeout over 3 1/3 inings to take the loss for Williamsport (15-13), which had a five-game winning streak snapped with the loss.

The Lake Monsters and Crosscutters will wrap up the three-game series at Centennial on Saturday starting at 6:05 pm. The first 500 fans will receive a free Vermont Expos replica jersey.
