FISHKILL, NY - Starter Noel Rodriguez made a strong first-career start an,d the hitters pounded out 10 hits as the Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Staten Island Yankees 6-1 at Dutchess Stadium Friday night to win game two of their three-game series. The win guarantees a series win for Hudson Valley and moves the Renegades to just two games behind the Yankees for first place in the McNamara Division.

The Renegades started their scoring in the first by plating two unearned runs. With a runner at first and one out, first baseman Nate Lowe hit a slow grounder that got by third baseman Yancarlos Baez of the Yankees. That put runners at the corners with one out. From there, third baseman Jim Haley grounded into a fielder's choice at second to drive in a run. With him at first and two out, Haley stole second the scored on an RBI single from second baseman Miles Mastrobuoni to give Hudson Valley a 2-0 lead.

The home team added to their lead in the fifth as a double by catcher Danny De La Calle and a sac bunt and error for shortstop Bill Pujols put runners at first and third with nobody out. From there, rightfielder Ryan Boldt grounded into a fielder's choice at second to score De La Calle and make the score 3-0.

It would become 4-0 in the sixth as a walk and single put runners at first and second with one out. Following a strikeout, Boldt laced a single into rightfield to score Landon Cray from second.

Hudson Valley then put two more on the board in the seventh. With Lowe at second and one out, Mastrobuoni laced a double into left-centerfield to drive in the run. Following a wild pitch, Mastrobuoni would score on an RBI groundout to second by leftfielder Landon Cray to make the score 6-0.

The Yankees lone run came in the eighth when with one out, centerfielder Dom Thompson-Williams smoked a triple into the rightfield corner. He then scored on an RBI groundout to short by Baez to make the final 6-1.

The Renegades got a dynamite starting performance by reliever Noel Rodriguez (1-1) in place of starter Jose Alonzo who got the night off to rest his surgically repaired shoulder. In his first career professional start, Rodriguez hurled five scoreless innings while allowing two hits and two walks. He also struck out one to earn the win. Relievers J.D. Busfield and Garrett Fulenchek combined to hold Staten Island to one run on two hits over the final four innings.

Taking the loss went to Yankees starter Kolton Mahoney (3-1) who deserved a better fate. The right-hander allowed four runs, but only two were earned, in 5.2 innings. The BYU product also allowed seven and three walks, while striking out two.

The Renegades got 10 hits on the night including a double and two singles from De La Calle who also scored a run. Lowe went 2-5 with two doubles and a run scored. Mastrobuoni chipped in with a single and double to go along with two RBI and a run himself.

The Yankees had only four hits, but did get a 2-4 performance from Thompson-Williams who tripled and scored the lone run of the game for Staten Island.

The Renegades will go for the sweep tomorrow as they return to Staten Island to take on the Yankees in game three of the series. Righty Spencer Moran (1-1, 3.20 ERA) will go for the Renegades against a to-be-determined pitcher for the Yankees. First-pitch is scheduled for 7:00. Hudson Valley returns home Sunday to take on the Brooklyn Cyclones in the first of a three-game series. It will be Star Wars night at Dutchess Stadium with first-pitch slated for 5:05.
