
West Michigan moves above .500 with second shutout of week

COMSTOCK PARK - For the second time this week, Sendy Vasquez, Andrew Kown and Orlando Perdomo combined for a shutout as the Whitecaps topped Southwest Michigan, 3-0 and moved above .500 for the first time this season.
The trio blanked South Bend, 7-0 on Monday.
Saturday afternoon, Vasquez pitched six innings, was followed by two innings from Andrew Kown. Closer Orlando Perdomo retired the side in order in the top of the ninth to earn his fourth save in four opportunities.
Joel Roa picked up his first hit of the season on a double to lead off the third inning. He scored to give the Whitecaps a 1-0 lead when Cameron Maybin beat out a would-be double play ball at first base.
Matt Joyce scored the second West Michigan run on a fourth inning single to left by Ryan Roberson. Joyce homered to lead off the sixth and put the Whitecaps on top, 3-0.
Roberson went 2-for-4 with a double and Vasquez earned the victory.
West Michigan has won consecutive games for the first time this season.
Traveling from East to West: After starting the season with 9 games against Eastern Division rivals, the Whitecaps will play their next 24 games against teams from the Western Division. The stretch includes a pair of eight game home stands. The only two teams from the West that the 'Caps will not have faced by the end of that run will be Quad Cities and Peoria.
Off to Iowa: For the first time this season, the Whitecaps will face a Western Division opponent when they travel to Cedar Rapids for a four game series beginning Monday. Below are the expected pitching match ups for the series:
