Lugnuts Win Thriller

April 15, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING - Josh Bell took the first offering of the ninth from Jonathan Valverde and blasted it over the center field wall to lift the Lugnuts to a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon to beat the South Bend SilverHawks at Oldsmobile Park before 2,774 fans.

The Lugnuts tied the game in the eighth when Brian Pettway hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly to center field. It was the only run that Lansing (7-3) would scratch across in the frame.

South Bend (5-5) took the initial lead in the fourth inning when Richard Mercado hit a fly ball into right field that dropped between Sean Shoffit and Jacob Butler to plate two runs and give the SilverHawks their only runs.

Po-Hsuan Keng and Paul Phillips combined on five innings of scoreless releif for the Lugnuts, allowing the offense to mount a comeback. Keng has not allowed a run this season in 10 2/3 innings.

The Lugnuts will take Sunday off before traveling to Clinton, Iowa to take on the LumberKings. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Chi-Hung Cheng (1-1) will take the ball for Lansing.
