Swing Take Series with 2-1 Win

Peoria, IL - Despite six errors and, the Swing beat the Chiefs 2-1 Saturday night behind Randy Roth's third home run of the series Starter Mitch Atkins threw five scoreless innings, but in the end, Roth was too much for the Chiefs' bullpen as Swing starter Jaime Garcia picked up his first victory of the season.

With Roberto Sotolongo on in relief for the Chiefs in the sixth, the Swing got a leadoff single from A.J. Van Slyke. Randy Roth stepped in and knocked a line-drive homer to give the Swing their first lead at 2-1. It was Roth's third HR of the series.

The Chiefs started the scoring by manufacturing a run in the first. After a Davy Gregg leadoff double and wild pitch, Matt Ciaramella had an RBI groundout to put the Chiefs on top 1-0. The first-inning run turned out to be the Chiefs only one in the contest.

The Chiefs had another good chance to score in the third. With Gregg and Ciaramella on third and second respectively and only one away, Jaime Garcia got Ryan Norwood looking and induced Brandon Taylor to ground out to second to end the threat. The Chiefs had a chance to tie in the ninth. Alberto Garcia had a one out single, and pinch-runner Dylan Johnston stole second base. After a pop out and error, the Chiefs had runners at the corners with two outs. Mark Reed came on to pinch-hit but struck out swinging to end the game and leave the tying run 90 feet away.

Atkins pitched very well through five innings. Despite the no-decision, the young right-hander shut out the Swing attack giving up four hits, walking one and striking out six. Roberto Sotolongo was draped with the loss. Sotolongo went two innings and allowed what proved to be the game-winning HR to Randy Roth in the sixth. Jeff Teasley and Ed Campusano combined to throw a scoreless eighth and ninth inning. Garcia notched his first win of the season. The southpaw went six innings giving up one run on three hits, with three walks and six punch-outs.

Pepsi Player of the Game

Mitch Atkins (RHP) - Atkins was unscored upon in five innings. He struck out six hitters, a season high and one shy of a career high. The right-hander now has allowed just two runs in 10 innings of work.

Notes... The three-hit game by Gregg was his first of the season...Attendance Saturday night was 2,535...Sunday is an off-day....The Chiefs were 0-9 with runners in scoring position. Peoria will travel to Beloit on Monday and take on the Snappers in the first game of a four game set.
