Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Fox Cities Stadium 5-3 in front of 2,312 fans Saturday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariner farmhands. The victory was also the team's fifth straight of the season, pushing their overall record to 6-4.

Brok Butcher came on in relief of starter Robert Mosebach and pitched 3 1/3 innings of stellar relief to pick up his first professional victory. Butcher allowed just one run on five hits after taking over for Mosebach, who took a liner off his left foot, in the fourth inning.

Ryan Aldridge shutout the Timber Rattlers over the final two innings to earn his first save of the season. The right-hander struck out four, including Robby Hudson to end the game.

Over the course of the three-game series the Kernels bullpen allowed just two runs during 14 1/3 innings of work.

Brad Coon, Ryan Leahy, Jordan Renz, and Hainley Statia each contributed a pair of hits as the Kernels out-slugged the Timber Rattlers 10 hits to 7.

Wisconsin grabbed an early 2-0 lead, its first of the series, off Mosebach in the fourth but the Kernels responded with three runs in the fifth inning to go back on top. Statia and Renz hit back-to-back doubles after Leahy singled to begin the inning. Renz's shot, his fifth double in four days, was a near-home run instead hitting off the top of the double-decker wall in left. Flint Wipke doubled home Statia later in the frame.

The two teams traded single runs in the sixth with the Kernels coming when Leahy singled home Madison Edwards, who had drawn a walk off Timber Rattlers pitcher Nick Allen to start the inning.

Renz singled to start the ninth and moved to second when Travis Schlichting took one for the team and was hit by a Joe Woerman offering. Wisconsin shortstop Jeff Dominguez then committed his second error of the day when he failed to snare a sure-fire double play grounder off Wipke's bat, instead allowing the ball to roll into left-center and allowing Renz to come home.

Wipke was 1-for-3 at the plate but drove in two runs. He also drew two of the team's six walks. The Kernels left a season-high 12 men on base. After taking Easter Sunday off the Kernels will open a four-game homestand with the West Michigan Whitecaps at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Monday. Game times for all four games in the series are 6:30 p.m. with gates opening one hour in advance. Monday's game will feature $1.00 hot dogs as the Kernels square off with the Detroit Tigers minor leaguers, including Cameron Maybin who was the 10th player taken in last June's draft.
