Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA - Carlos Rosa and Gilbert De La Vara combined to strike out twelve and lead the Burlington Bees (5-5) to an 8-0 shutout win over the Beloit Snappers (5-5) at Community Field tonight. It was the Bees' first shutout of the season and gave the team its first series win by taking two of three in the set.
Rosa (1-1) earned his first win since August 12, 2003 n the Arizona Rookie League after going 0-5 in 2004 and missing all of last year to "Tommy John" surgery. He allowed four hits and three walks while matching his season high with six strikeouts. De La Vara finished the final four innings for his first save of the year. He allowed just two hits and no walks and also struck out six. A pitcher has earned a save in all five of the Bees' victories this season.
Snappers' starter Oswaldo Sosa (0-2) matched Rosa through three innings, but the Bees broke through against him in the fourth. Mario Lisson led off with a double to left and scored on a base hit by JP Lowen. Lowen advanced to second when Eli Tintor's throw from right went all the way to the backstop for an error. After a lineout, Lowen moved to third on a passed ball and scored when Jeremy Jirschele lined a single to right-center. Jose Duarte singled and Antonio Sabatini walked to load the bases and then Sosa walked Ethien Santana to force in the Bees' third run and force himself out of the game. Yohan Pino came in and gave up an RBI single to Josh Johnson and a sacrifice fly to Chris McConnell before getting Lisson to ground out to end the inning. The five-run frame is the biggest of the season for the Bees.
Pino retired the next six batters and the last five by strikeout to get through the sixth. Danny Vais walked three in the seventh, but stranded the bases loaded. Alex Smit gave up the final three runs in the eighth with control problems of his own. With a runner on first and two outs, Smit walked Johnson, McConnell, and Lisson in a row to force in a run before Lowen blooped a two-run single into short left-center to extend the lead to 8-0. After another walk to Jeff Howell, David Shinskie replaced Smit and threw just one pitch to get a groundout to end the inning. Snappers' pitchers combined to walk eleven Bees' hitters in the game.
The Bees are off tomorrow for Easter Sunday and return to action on Monday night in the first of a four-game series at home against the Ft. Wayne Wizards. RH Rayner Oliveros (1-0, 1.29) will start for the Bees on the first Dollar Monday of the season presented by Miller Lite. General admission tickets, hot dogs, pizza, popcorn, and Pepsi products are all $1 and cans of Miller products are just 2-for-$3 throughout the game. The gates open at 6:00 and the game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
