West Michigan Blows Out The Loons

COMSTOCK PARK - James Skelton went 4-for-5 with two doubles, including a three-run double to cap a 6-run second inning as the Whitecaps smashed Great Lakes, 12-5.

Every position player in the Whitecaps starting lineup scored as the ‘Caps posted season highs in runs and hits (16).

West Michigan grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Louis Ott scored on a ground out by Scott Sizemore.

The Loons rallied for three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead.

But in the bottom of the second, West Michigan chased previously unbeaten pitcher Clayton Kershaw from the game when eight straight batters reached base with one out.

Ott and Ryan Strieby each had RBI hits, Sizemore drew an RBI walk and Skelton delivered his three-run double to cap the rally and go ahead, 7-3.

Kershaw lasted just 1.1 innings and yielded seven runs on five hits with four walks allowed, all in the second inning.

West Michigan also tallied four runs in the fourth.

Jonah Nickerson allowed five runs in six innings of work, but picked up the win. Jeff Gerbe pitched three perfect innings to shut down complete the game and earn a save.

Sizemore and Jeramy Laster had two RBI each for West Michigan.

Josh Bell went 3-for-4 for the Loons and fell a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Bell hit a two-run homer in the third inning.
