Dayton Dragons News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - The Dragons looked to snap a season long three game losing streak at Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon against the Fort Wayne Wizards, who handed Dayton its first divisional loss and shutout on the season with a 1-0 win on Saturday in the opening game of a quick two game series. It was another low scoring affair, but the Dragons came out on top Sunday with a 2-1 victory.
For the second consecutive game the Wizards jumped out in front with a first inning run. Daryl Jones' two out infield pop up was lost in the sun by Dragons third baseman Juan Francisco and dropped for a RBI hit as Jonathan Schemmel scored from second base for a 1-0 Fort Wayne lead. Unlike Saturday, on Sunday the Dragons had an answer, picking up the tying run in the top of the second on a Tony Esquer RBI grounder that scored Denis Phipps who was hit by an Andy Underwood (ND) pitch to lead off the inning.
The Dragons scored the deciding run in the top of the eighth inning off of reliever Derek McDaid (LP, 3-1). Francisco singled to start the inning, and went to second on a single by Denis Phipps. A balk by McDaid moved the runners up 90 feet, and a wild pitch brought Francisco in to score the second run of the game for the Dragons.
Jamie Arneson (ND) for the Dragons turned in his longest outing of the season going 4.0 innings, allowing five hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Arneson allowed just the one run in the first inning, a run that wouldn't have scored had it not been for an error and the misplayed pop up.
After Arneson's day was done, Pedro Viola (WP, 2-0) shut out the Wizards for three innings. Viola did not allow a hit, while walking two and striking out two. Marcos Mateo (SV, 4) got the final six outs, stranding a runner at third in the 9th, to snap the three game losing streak for the Dragons.
The venue switches to Fifth Third Field on Monday night as the Dragons host the Wizards for three games in two days. Monday night features a double header, to make up for a rain out in Dayton on April 14th. Monday's DH starts at 6:00 PM, with the gates opening at Fifth Third Field at 5:30 PM. Only tickets marked May 14, 2007 will be accepted at the gate. The Dragons will send RHP Rafael Gonzalez (5-0, 1.87 ERA) and RHP Anthony Gressick (1-1, 8.78 ERA) to the hill, while the Wizards counter with LHP Orlando Lara (1-2, 5.60 ERA) and RHP John Hussey (0-0, 0.00 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 5:30 PM. The game will also be streamed live on the internet via All-In Broadcasting at www.daytondragons.com.
