Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING- For the second straight day, the Lansing Lugnuts were victims of a big late inning rally as the South Bend SilverHawks scored eight runs in the eighth inning to take an 11-3 win at Coveleski Stadium Saturday night. This comes one night after the Swing of the Quad Cities plated seven runs late in Friday's game.

The SilverHawks scored three times in the third inning to take an early lead. After a Daniel Perales groundout drove in the first run of the game, Joey Side doubled into left field to plate Max Oxendine to make it a 2-0 lead. Brad Miller's double to left scored Side to push the advantage to 3-0.

Lansing trailed 3-1 in the seventh when Jonathan Jaspe homered to left to cut the lead to 3-2. Chris Emanuele then singled and was driven home on a Josh Bell double to right-center to knot the game at 3-3.

South Bend snapped the tie in the eighth by sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs while taking advantage of four errors in the frame. Yuneski Sanchez singled into center field to load the bases, but Justin Brashear would come home to score on a Yuber Rodriguez error to put the SilverHawks ahead 4-3. Steve Mena then scored when a Josh Bell miscue allowed Matt Oxendine to reach and make it 5-3. Side followed that with an RBI double and Parra added a two-run single to make it a 9-3 game. The SilverHawks added two more runs in the frame to cap off the scoring at 11-3.

Each starting pitcher delivered quality starts and fanned 11, but neither factored into the decision. Instead Reid Mahon (2-1) got the win for South Bend, while Julio Pinto (1-2) took the loss for the Lugnuts.

Lansing (17-15) and South Bend (15-18) will play the second game of the series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
