Weekend Primer: Saints Look to Bounce Back During Military Appreciation Weekend

November 15, 2019 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

After suffering their first two regulation loses of the season, the Dubuque Fighting Saints will look to rebound during Military Appreciation Weekend sponsored by Hodge and Run 4 Troops. The Saints will honor local military during both of their games: Friday against the Tri-City Storm and Saturday against the Lincoln Stars. Dubuque still sits top three in the league overall and number one in terms of winning percentage. Here is all you need to know for the culmination of the homestand.

-The Fighting Saints will sport camo jerseys for both games this weekend as part of Military Appreciation Weekend. Dubuque will then auction off the jerseys after Saturday's game to fans attending. The proceeds from the jerseys will go directly to the Veterans Freedom Center in Dubuque. Along with the proceeds from the jerseys, the 50/50 Raffle proceeds from the entire month (six games) will go to the VFC as well.

-Dubuque was shutdown offensively during the course of last weekends games. The team mustered just three goals despite outshooting their opponents 63-49. However, Friday night's game could have easily produced a few more goals for Dubuque. Saturday the offense simply wasn't there.

-As mentioned above, even with the two loses, the Saints are off to their best start to a season since 2013-14. Dubuque is 8-2-1 through their first 11 games and remain one of the top teams in the league in terms of points. In terms of wins they are third and winning percentage they are first.

-There have really only been two games this season where the Saints can be accused of not putting forth a strong defensive effort. For the most part the stats back up the eye test: Dubuque has been one of the best defensive teams in the league. The Saints are allowing less than 2.5 goals per game.

-Special teams took a slight hit this weekend for Dubuque as the team relinquished a shorthanded goal against Waterloo and Fargo, while also failing to score on the power play for the first full weekend this season. Even with the misstep the Saints rank first in the league at 29% on the power play and are a respectable 9th at 82.4% on the PK.

-Ty Jackson had his seven-game point streak snapped during the Saturday matchup against Fargo. However, he and his brother Dylan are still leading the offense this season for Dubuque. Ty is second in points with 13 while Dylan ranks first with 14 points and is also tied for first with six goals. Dubuque got a slight boost this weekend from their secondary scoring as Tommy Middleton notched his first of the season. Last weekend it was Jimmy Glynn getting in on the scoring for the first time. Dubuque will continue to look for more depth scoring as they have 13 players with at least a goal, but still rank towards the bottom of the league in that category.

TRI-CITY:

-Despite having to travel to Dubuque for the game, Tri-City will likely be more rested for this contest than the last between the two teams. The Storm played Dubuque as their third game in four nights last time out and lost 3-1 to Dubuque.

-Since that game, Tri-City has produced better, going 5-4 in that span. What has continued to be puzzling about Tri-City is their propensity to give up huge goal totals. The Storm have allowed five goals or more three times this season, including eight goals twice. The Storm allowed five or more goals three times all of last season and never allowed more than five.

-Colby Ambrosio has taken off offensively for Tri-City in a more central role. Ambrosio leads the team in points and goals and has been especially dangerous on the power play where he has scored six of his nine goals and six of the team's 13 total power play tallies.

-After facing the top penalty kill in Waterloo, the Fighting Saints will take on the second best kill in Tri-City this weekend. Last time out Dubuque was able to break through against the Storm with a late, game-tying power play goal.

LINCOLN:

-What a difference a season makes for the Lincoln Stars. The Stars need just four more wins to tie their mark from last season as they jumped out to a great start in 2019-20. Lincoln is second in the West, a single point behind Waterloo, and have ridden a strong offense to a great start.

-That aforementioned offense has Lincoln over a third of the way to their goal total from last season. The Stars tallied 2.4 goals per game last season and currently sit at 3.8 scored per game this season. It has been night and day for Lincoln.

-Where the Stars can be exploited is their defense. As of Thursday, just four teams had allowed more goals than Lincoln. Despite the dynamic offense, Lincoln still hasn't found its footing on the defensive side of things.

-The Stars continue to roll, grabbing points in seven of their last 10 games. They will have to be careful, and more disciplined than they have been this year against Dubuque if they want to win. Lincoln ranks second in penalty minutes with 245 total. They have allowed 11 power play goals this season and are 12 in PK percentage.
