Week 25 - Crunch Roll with Perfect Week
March 19, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Syracuse Crunch News Release
CRUNCH ROLL WITH PERFECT WEEK: As Associate Coach Mark Holick said this weekend, not all of the wins were Picassos, but the Syracuse Crunch found a way to win all three games last week to extend their winning streak to a season-high four games and put themselves just one point back of a playoff spot. The Crunch won three games in come-back fashion, including two games in which they trailed in the third period. On Wednesday, the Crunch fell behind the Phantoms in Glens Falls after a 5-on-3 power-play goal by Denis Hamel in the second period. But the Crunch found some late third-period magic. Riley Holzapfel scored with 6:51 remaining and John Mitchell followed it up with 4:10 remaining in regulation. On Friday, the Crunch returned home to face Rochester for the first time since February 4. The Crunch fell behind 1-0, led 2-1, but then found themselves trailing 3-2 early in the third period. Like they did on Wednesday, the Crunch persevered. First, Mathieu Carle scored with 8:49 remaining and then Nick Schaus tallied a power-play goal with 3:09 remaining in regulation. Saturday saw more of the same with the Crunch allowing the first goal midway through the first period on the power play. J.F. Jacques evened the score in the first before Carle put the Crunch up by one in the second period. Adirondack tied the game late in the second, but Jacques scored his second of the game with less than a minute remaining in the second period. The Crunch then tacked on two more in the third period for a 5-2 win. Prior to this week, the Crunch had won just four games all season when allowing the first goal. They accomplished that feat in three consecutive games. The Crunch have now won seven out of their last eight games.
MAROON AMONG CRUNCH ALL-TIME LEADERS: Left wing Patrick Maroon is quietly having one of the best seasons in Syracuse Crunch history. His 68 points (28g, 40a) rank him fourth among AHL scorers this season. He is just two points back of third ranked Keith Aucoin, who is currently on recall to Washington and three points behind Norfolk rookie Cory Conacher. With 12 games remaining, Maroon is tied for ninth all-time in single-season points in Crunch history. He is one point behind Brian Bonin's 1997-98 mark of 69 and is 11 points off of the record set by Lonny Bohonos in 1995-96 and matched by Bill Bowler in 2000-01. Brandon McMillan recorded his first two-goal game of the season and J.F. Jacques tallied two assists in the win. The Crunch improved to 3-1-2-1 against Rochester this season. They will play twice this week, in Rochester on Wednesday and at the War Memorial on Saturday. They'll finish up the season series on the final Saturday of the regular season. The Americans followed up their loss with a 4-3 overtime win against the Binghamton Senators the following night. Rochester is tied for eighth in the Western Conference with the Lake Erie Monsters.
ST. JOHN'S (WINNIPEG JETS): Friday will mark the fourth and final meeting of the season between the Crunch and the St. John's IceCaps. The Crunch and IceCaps split a two-game set in St. John's in early December. The Crunch the defeated St. John's in dramatic fashion at the War Memorial, 6-4, on March 3. At the time of their last meeting, the Crunch were nine points out of a playoff spot. They trailed 4-2 heading into the third period, and had won just one game all season when trailing going into the third period. The Crunch scored four unanswered goals in the third period to come away with the victory. Since that win, the Crunch have won seven out of their last eight games and are just one point out of a playoff spot. Since their loss to the Crunch, St. John's has gone 5-3.
