Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
ZEBULON, N.C. - Nick Alvarez singled in the tie-breaking run in the seventh inning to give the Suns their sixth consecutive win against Carolina, a 5-4 victory in front of 2,438 fans Wednesday at Five County Stadium.
Winning pitcher Richard Bartlett (1-1) stranded the bases loaded with one out in the sixth inning, preserving a 4-4 tie. He delivered a scoreless seventh as well. Jonathan Broxton, in his first relief appearance since April 2003, allowed a leadoff single, but otherwise retired the side in order in the eighth. Luis Gonzalez earned his third save, recording a perfect ninth.
Suns reliever Beau Dannemiller, pitching on one day's rest after going a season-long 3-2/3 innings Monday, walked three batters, allowing the tying run to score in the sixth. Starting pitcher Eric Hull gave up a two-run home run to league slugging percentage leader Jason Hill in the fourth and gave up back-to-back hits to start the sixth before departing. Hull scored the go-ahead run in the fifth, reaching second when right fielder Jeremy Hermida muffed a fly ball. He advanced on Todd Donovan's sacrifice and scored on a wild pitch.
Jon Weber hit his eighth home run, a leadoff shot off Mudcats starter Yorman Bazardo in the third. Weber had two hits, extending his hitting streak to 10 games.
Alvarez's hit came against Mudcats reliever Mike Flannery (1-1) who earned the loss.
Right-hander Joel Hanrahan (3-3, 4.45 ERA) is scheduled to oppose Montgomery right-hander Brian Lockwood (2-4, 7.52) at 7:05 p.m. Thursday as the Suns (37-29) face the Biscuits (32-34) in the first game of a four-game series which concludes the first half at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Broadcast time on WFXJ-AM 930 The Fox and www.jacksonville.com is 6:50 p.m.
SUNS SPOTS: The Suns' magic number decreased to two vs. Birmingham and could be as low as two pending a Mississippi loss. Under that scenario, if those two teams lose and the Suns win Thursday, the Suns will clinch the South Division title and make the post-season for the first time in the Baseball Grounds era. ...Weber has 13 hits in last 19 at bats, spanning the last four games and has hit safely in 17 of 18 games. ...The Suns are 12-2 in June. ...The Suns are 30-3 when scoring five or more runs. ...After hitting a stand-up double, LF Tydus Meadows left the game under his own power in the sixth because of an unspecified injury. ...The Suns' bullpen has allowed two earned runs over its last 31 innings.
