Smokies sweep Barons, 6-3

BIRMINGHAM, AL- The Tennessee Smokies finished off a three-game sweep of the Birmingham Barons with a 6-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon at the Hoover Met in front a 4,513 fans. The loss was the Barons third straight and dropped the team another half game behind division leading Jacksonville with four games left to play in the first half. The Suns play later today and could push their lead to 2.5 games with a victory over Carolina.

Tony Pena (2-6) picked up the win for the Smokies after tossing 7.2 innings and giving up just two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out five. Pena benefited from a solid offensive performance as Tennessee scored six runs on ten hits including home runs by Jesus Cota and Matt Morgan. Centerfielder Jarred Ball also contributed a 3-for-4 effort for the Smokies. Casey Daigle notched his sixth save after retiring Jonathan Aceves to end the game.

For the Barons, Sean Tracey (6-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs on nine hits while walking one and strikeout out a season-high eight batters. Jerry Owens ripped his first Double-A homer in the sixth inning off of Pena and Antoin Gray went 2-for-4 with an RBI to pace the Birmingham offense.

Tomorrow night, the Mobile BayBears come into town for a four-game series that will end the first half. Game one will feature LHP Jim Bullard (2-2, 6.16) versus RHP Mike Thompson (5-3, 2.95).
