Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Caberea Weaver accumulated four RBIs, but another big inning of offense for the Charleston RiverDogs proved to be too much as the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers dropped their fourth-straight game on Friday night 11-5 at Atrium Health Ballpark

RHP Kevin Folman began the evening on the mound for Kannapolis. The Minnesota native looked more efficient than his numbers may say, allowing three hits and three runs while walking two and striking out four. LHP Rigo Fernandez (L, 1-2) relieved Folman in the fifth inning, going 1.2 innings and allowing three runs on one hit, walking two and striking out one.

Charleston opened the scoring in the top of the first frame, striking first on a Curtis Mead solo shot, his third home run in the last two games. The homer to right center field made it 1-0 RiverDogs early.

The Ballers took their first lead of the series in the bottom of the second. After Luis Mieses and Harvin Mendoza singled, Weaver crushed a three-run shot to left field, giving Kannapolis a 3-1 lead.

Another big inning proved to be the downfall for the Cannon Ballers, allowing five runs in the top of the sixth. Heriberto Hernandez began the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Brett Wisely. Four batters later, Michael Berglund notched a bases-clearing RBI double, allowing Nick Schnell, Jonathan Embry, and Abiezel Ramirez to cross the plate. Alika Williams then followed with an RBI single that moved Berglund across the plate, growing the RiverDogs lead to 8-3.

LHP Jose Lopez started on the hill for Charleston. The hard-throwing southpaw worked efficiently, striking out eight and walking one while allowing four hits and three runs in his 4.2 innings of work. RHP Audry Lugo (W, 1-0) followed Lopez with an even better night, throwing 2 no-hit innings, walking two and striking out four.

Mead's hot streak continued in the top of the eighth, getting two more RBIs on a single to right field, scoring Embry and Ramirez to expand the Charleston lead to 10-3.

Ramirez got in on the fun with a sacrifice fly of his own in the top of the ninth, scoring Diego Infante, growing the RiverDogs advantage to 11-3.

Weaver tallied his fourth RBI of the evening in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI double that brought Mendoza home. Jose Rodriguez pulled the Ballers to a six-run deficit on a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Weaver to score, making it 11-5, advantage Charleston.

Kannapolis will look to turn the tides on their four-game losing streak on Saturday night in the fifth of six matchups this week with the RiverDogs. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. RHP Andrew Dalquist (1-3, 4.70 ERA) will get the start for the Ballers on the mound, while Charleston will send out LHP Ben Brecht (1-2, 3.90 ERA). The Cannon Ballers will continue their 4th of July festivities postgame with a Human Cannonball exhibition planned for fans to enjoy.

Tickets can be purchased for any of the remaining home games at kcballers.com or at the F&M Bank Box Office located at Atrium Health Ballpark.
