Heavyweight Fight Goes to GreenJackets

North Augusta, SC - The GreenJackets and Fireflies were both looking for the knockout blow on Friday night. Augusta found it in the 8th inning. Willie Carter's double off the wall scored Cade Bunnell, and the Jackets hung on for a 9-8 win.

Augusta has now won three of their last four. They guaranteed a series split heading into the final two games of the series.

The Fireflies left 16 men-on-base for the game. It started early when they scored just one run in the first two innings and left the bases loaded in both frames. With Columbia leading 2-1 in the fourth, Stephen Paolini hit his first home run of the season. A three-run bomb gave the Jackets a 4-2 advantage.

The Columbia offense was relentless though, and took advantage of 12 walks from GreenJackets pitchers. Juan Carlos Negret and Kale Emshoff hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning. Columbia led 6-4. The GreenJackets tied it at six on a Jose Bermudez double, and a passed ball to score Bermudez, in the sixth inning.

But, Negret went to work again.

In the seventh inning, Negret hit his third home run of the series, and his second of the night to put Columbia in front, 8-6. All three of his hits in the series have been home runs.

Victor De Hoyos wasn't phased. His two run blast, in the 7th inning, tied the game. Carter's double came in the 8th inning to give the Jackets the lead for good. It was his only hit of the night.

Justin Yeager pitched 2.1 scoreless frames to get the win. Of the five GreenJackets who pitched Friday, Yeager was the only one to not allow a run. He'd strikeout Emshoff and Felix Familia to end the game.

NOTES:

Landon Stephens goes 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI

Justin Yeager is now 5-0 on the season

Cody Birdsong finishes 2-for-4 and has a four game hitting streak.
