Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Stars Make Only Waterloo Appearance

The Black Hawks host two games against the Lincoln Stars this weekend. The opening faceoff on both Friday and Saturday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Some of Lincoln's best hockey has been played on hostile ice; so far this season, the Stars are 5-3-1 when skating in an opposing rink. Lincoln has also shown are talent for irritating their opponents in 2019/20. While the Stars have a league-high 19.2 penalty minute per game, their collective opponents have been assessed an average of over 22.7 per night. After this weekend, the season series will conclude when Waterloo visits Lincoln March 20th and 21st.

Western Conference Focus

Friday is the first of six consecutive Black Hawks games against opponents from the Western Conference. The next game versus a team from the East will be against the Madison Capitols on New Year's Eve. Between now and then Waterloo meets the Stars twice, the Omaha Lancers on the road for two, and the Des Moines Buccaneers in a home-and-home set just after Christmas.

Winning Close Ones

During the 2018/19 season, the Black Hawks were 9-5-7 in games settled by one goal. Through just 20 games in the current campaign, Waterloo has already matched last year's one-goal-game win total, with a mark of 9-0-1. Only the Dubuque Fighting Saints (9-2-1) have as many wins by the slimmest of margins at this stage. Five of the Hawks' nine one-goal wins have come during road games.

November in a Nutshell

Waterloo went 8-3-1 during the month of November. The last time the Hawks won eight regular season games in one calendar month was in February of 2017. Xander Lamppa led Waterloo's offense last month by averaging a point per game (five goals, seven assists), while Ryder Rolston paced the Hawks with a team-high six goals. Defenseman Brehdan Engum had the team's leading plus/minus figure (+6). In goal, Logan Stein and Gabriel Carriere each picked up four wins.

Weekend Recap

The Black Hawks had a superb Thanksgiving week, winning three games in three days from Thursday through Saturday. On Thanksgiving night, Xander Lamppa scored less than five minutes into the game and Logan Stein made 28 saves in a 4-0 shutout of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. On the road in Des Moines Friday, Lamppa recorded two goals during a 4-1 victory versus the Des Moines Buccaneers. Visiting Cedar Rapids Saturday, Brehdan Engum scored the only goal, and Stein made 30 stops in a 1-0 result for the Hawks. It is the first time Waterloo has won three games over the Thanksgiving holiday since 2013.
