Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA - The Washington Wild Things (9-10) dropped their second game to the Evansville Otters (14-7) by a score of 7-5 Saturday at CONSOL Energy Park. Washington gained momentum in the eighth and ninth innings, but it wasn't enough to close the gap and capture a victory.
Luke Wilkins, who returned from an elbow surgery to pitch his first game of the 2016 season, allowed only three hits and struck out four while keeping the Otters off the board in his five innings of work. Brandon Hinkle took the loss for Washington allowing three runs on two hit in one inning.
In the second inning Ricky Rodriguez doubled to bring David Popkins to plate for the first score of the night.
Evansville's bats didn't connect until the sixth inning when Chris Breen hit a sacrifice fly bringing Josh Allen home. Evansville went on to add three additional runs in the inning. The Otters added one run each in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.Â
The Wild Things, however, battled back in the eighth and ninth innings. Jamal Austin hit a sacrifice fly to score Alex McKeon.  Jimmy Yezzo followed suit by driving Austin Wobrock across the plate. Rodriguez's sacrifice fly brought Washington to within two runs of Evansville (6-4).
Evansville added insurance in the top of the ninth when John Schultz scored on a Breen double. In the bottom of the ninth Wobrock blasted fly ball to right field to drive in Andrew Heck, but Washington fell short with a final score of 7-5.
The Wild Things and Evansville meet for the final game of the series on Sunday; first pitch will be at 4:05p.m. EDT.
