Southern Illinois wins over Lake Erie

MARION, Ill. -- The Lake Erie Crushers were defeated by the Southern Illinois Miners, 2-1, on Saturday evening as the Crushers were not able to get a run across after the fourth inning and missed some opportunities late in the game.

For the Crushers (12-6), the loss snaps a four game winning streak. The Miners (10-9), are now 2-3 in one run games after the win.

The Crushers struck first when Jose Barraza hit a solo home run to right field with one out, his third homer of the season.

The Miners took the lead for the first time in the series in the bottom of the fifth inning. Aaron Gates singled to lead off the inning. He went to second on a groundout to Crushers shortstop, Carlos Avila. Craig Massey then hit a triple down the first base line that went all the way to the wall. Gates scored on the hit. Johnny Cole was out on a ground ball to the second baseman Max Casper, but Massey scored the eventual winning run on the ground out.

The Crushers had opportunities in the eighth and ninth inning but could not get a run across. In the eighth, the Crushers had bases loaded with one out as Brendan Costantino doubled, Mike Devine reached first on a dropped third strike and Casper walked. Connor Oliver then popped out to first and Carlos Avila struck out to end the inning.

With one out in the ninth, Parks Jordan, who came into the game to play left field in the eighth inning, hit an infield single. With two outs, Parker Norris and Costantino walked, but Daniel Aldrich struck out looking to end the game.

Colin Feldtman (0-2) started for the Crushers and picked up the tough-luck loss. He went 4.1 innings, allowing only two runs. Five Crusher relievers came out of the bullpen and did not allow a run in 3.2 innings of work. Mike Devine started the game in left field, but then came into pitch in the eighth inning.

Dan Ludwig (2-0) started the game for the Miners and picked up a win, going 7.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits. He also struck out four. Evan Mott finished off the eighth inning and then Jake Cose (2) came into the game to get the save in the ninth. He walked two but struck out three Crushers.

Oliver's hit streak reaches 11 consecutive games and he has hit safely in every game that he has started. Juan Avila's nine game hit streak came to an end as he went 0-4 in the game.

The start of tonight's game was delayed 39 minutes due to rain.

The Crushers finish the series with the Miners on Sunday at Rent One Park. The Crushers will send right hander Trevor Longfellow (0-0, 3.27) to the hill. The Miners starting pitcher will be lefty Rick Teasley (1-1, 3.24). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
