
Thomasson Powers Offense in Bums Win

FLORENCE, KY - Brandon Thomasson went 4 for 5 with a home run, two doubles, six runs batted in, and two runs scored, as the Traverse City Beach Bums(7-12) defeated the Florence Freedom(6-13), 10-7.
With one out in the first inning, the Bums took an early 1-0 lead on an opposite field solo home run by Steven Patterson. Thomasson led off the second with a 2 base hit it left. Giancarlo Brugnoni moved him to third on a single, then with Tyler Peterson at the plate, a pitch got away from the catcher for a passed ball, scoring Thomasson.
The Beach Bums broke things open in the third with a three run inning. With one away, Steven Patterson hit his second solo home run of the game, this time pulling it over the right field wall. Jose Vargas and Will Kengor each singled after the long ball, and we brought home by a Thomasson two-run double to center, and it was 5-0.
Florence fought back in the fourth inning to come within one. Isaac Wenrich plated two runs with a single to center. Travis Weaver and Andre Mercurio each grounded out scoring runners from third, and the Bums were able to limit the damage, and continue to lead.
The Bums offense kept on rolling in the fifth, when Vargas walked, Kengor singled, and Thomasson, scored them both with a single to center. After a scoreless sixth, Thomasson got on the board again. Vargas reached on an error, and then Thomasson rocketed a two-run homer, his first of the season, over the left field wall. Taylor Oldham led off the bottom of the inning for Florence with a home run over his own.
In the ninth, Ryan Bottger led off with a single and immediately stole second. Steven Patterson then got his third RBI of the game with a single to center, and the Bums were doubling up Florence, 10-5. In the bottom of the inning, Oldham led off by getting hit by a pitch. Austin Newell came up and smacked a fly ball to deep centerfield, Connor Hofmann leaped to snare the ball but it went over his head. Hofmann went down and stayed down, while both runner scored on an inside-the-park home run. Hofmann was immediately tended to and left the game due to an apparent knee injury. Michael Shreves went five innings for the victory, allowing two earned runs on four hits. He improves to 1-2 on the season. Stetson Nelson gets the loss for Florence as he went 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits.
The Beach Bums and Florence Freedom with finish this weekend series with the rubber game tomorrow night. Jeremy Gooding will take the mound for Florence and Jacob Lanning tries to win the series for the Beach Bums. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm and Tom Willms will have the Miller Lite Pre-Game Show at 5:45pm, on 101.9- The Bay.
