Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET, IL - The Joliet Slammers presented by ATI Physical Therapy saw Spencer Medick return to the mound in dominating fashion after being on the injured reserve list since May 24. Medick pitched 7.1 innings and gave up just two runs in the Slammers' 5-2 win over the Gateway Grizzlies Saturday, June 4.
The Grizzlies jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning off a two-run home run by Craig Massoni. Massoni got a hold of Medick's pitch and sent it way over the right field wall to give Gateway a 2-0 lead.
The Grizzlies did not enjoy the lead for long as the Slammers came back and scored three in the bottom half of the first and it was all Slammers from there on out.
Joliet put up five runs in the game, but those two extra runs were just a pair of insurance runs as Medick shut down the Grizzlies' hitters. Medick allowed just four hits in his 7.1 innings of work Saturday night.
After back-to-back walks in the eighth inning, Kevin Simmons replaced Medick. Simmons picked up right where Medick left off. Simmons allowed one hit and no runs in his 1.2 innings of work.
The Grizzlies had a minor threat to score in the ninth, but Simmons fanned Tyler Nordgren to end the game.
While Medick was dominating on the mound, Alfredo Rodriguez was unstoppable at the plate. Rodriguez went 4-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. He was just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Rodriguez had an RBI triple in the first followed by a single and back-to-back doubles.
Rodriguez's performance at the plate made him Saturday night's Merchants and Manufacturers player of the game.
Carter Bell was the story of last night's game driving in four runs including a huge three-run home run in the first inning. He came back Saturday night and drove in two more runs. Bell has 20 RBIs this season, which is good enough for the team-lead.
Jake Gronsky also helped give Medick some run support as he also drove in two runs. Gronsky doubled in the first inning, scoring Boo Vazquez and Carter Bell.
Joliet has gotten itself back on track after losing back-to-back games to the Evansville Otters. Saturday night's win secures the series-win for the Slammers. They will have a chance to go for the sweep Sunday, June 5 over the Gateway Grizzlies.
Saturday's winning pitcher was Spencer Medick and Kevin Simmons picked up the save. Medick improves to 3-0 on the season and lowers his ERA to 4.50.
Sunday's first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. at Silver Cross Field. The Slammers will stay at home to take on the Lake Erie Crushers in a three-game series beginning Tuesday.
