Evansville Otters News Release
(WASHINGTON, Penn.) - The Evansville Otters were defeated on Wednesday night 7-2 against the Washington Wild Things.
Evansville was able to avoid a no-hit bid by pitcher Justin Edwards and avoid a shutout, but couldn't quite come back in the series tying loss.
Similar to Tuesday, both teams remained scoreless into the third inning. In the bottom half, Washington took the 1-0 lead on an RBI double from infielder Scott Lawson.
Evansville trailed until the bottom of the fourth inning when it started to pour, pulling the teams off the field at 7:44 p.m. EST. After the hour and 26 minute delay, Scott Kelley allowed a two-run triple to outfielder Chris Sidick.
Up 3-0, Washington would add to the lead with a two-run home run from Eric Stephens in the fifth inning and another pair of runs in the sixth.
Justin Edwards maintained the 5-0 lead into the 8th where he also took his attempt of a no-hitter. The righty got the lead out and walked catcher Bryson Rahier but then allowed a clean single to shortstop Greg Fontenot along the left side of the infield. Evansville would then add a run on the next play and another run in the 9th inning of the 7-2 loss.
Washington improves to 30-36 with the victory as Evansville is now 25-42 as their season-high eight game road winning streak comes to an end.
Edwards (4-2) is the winning pitcher after allowing an unearned run in 7 1/3 innings pitched. He also struck out eight hitters on the night. The loss goes to Scott Kelley (5-5) for yielding seven runs (six earned) in five innings.
Both teams will meet again on Thursday night in the series finale. Righty Matt Trent (0-1, 11.70 Earned Run Average) will start for Evansville as he will be opposed by right-hander Gary Lee (1-3, 5.03 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. EST at Consol Energy Park.
