Southern Illinois Miners News Release
LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Miners fell behind to Rockford early and never recovered as they snapped their four-game winning streak with a 9-3 loss to the RiverHawks Wednesday night at Road Ranger Stadium.
Southern Illinois all-star David Harden surrendered a pair of home runs in the first two innings and suffered his third consecutive loss. RiverHawks starter Alex Szymanski held the Miners to two runs off four hits in eight innings of work to pick up the win.
Rockford led the entire way. Jason James hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. After Nate Hall hit a solo home run in the top of the second to cut the lead in half, Rockford's Luis Parache gave the RiverHawks a 3-1 lead with his sixth home run of the year.
The Miners could not figure out Szymanski. He tossed over 130 pitches in eight innings to earn his fifth win of the season. The only runs he allowed were on a pair of solo home runs by Hall and Will Block. Block's home run was his first hit since returning from a sprained thumb that held him out of the lineup for three games. Hall has now homered in three consecutive games.
The RiverHawks put the game away in the fifth inning when four runs crossed the plate against Harden. Only three of the runs were earned. Harden surrendered eight runs, six of them earned, in six innings.
Ben Shivers tossed a scoreless eighth for the Miners. Reserve first baseman Ryan Meade made his third relief appearance for Southern Illinois, allowing one run off two hits and a wild pitch in the eighth inning.
Boomer Blanchard drove in a run for the Miners in the ninth on a sacrifice fly off reliever Brad Allen.
The Miners will battle the RiverHawks in the series finale on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. when B.J. Dail (1-4, 6.56) makes the start for Southern Illinois against lefty Chris Nyman (1-1, 1.72) at Road Ranger Stadium. The Miners return home on Tuesday, Aug. 9 for a 7:05 p.m. game against Rockford.
