Rockford RiverHawks News Release

LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks have signed two rookies, including a Rockford resident.

Rockford's only professional baseball team announced on Wednesday that it has signed catcher Gabe DeMarco and outfielder Sterling Perozo. The RiverHawks also placed outfielder Evan Button on the seven-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday, and put catcher Reno Malay on the suspended list.

DeMarco, a Boylan High School graduate, played college baseball at Illinois State University. DeMarco was an all-state selection his senior year of high school. Last year, DeMarco played 11 games in the independent Golden League with St. George and hit .281 with four RBI. DeMarco was with Normal for six games earlier this year and was 1-for-7 with a RBI.

Perozo is a rookie from Jacksonville University. He hit .288 with four homers and 33 RBI this spring for the Dolphins.

Button is on the DL because of a strained rib cage. He was hitting .241 with a RBI in seven games. Button has not played since last Wednesday.

DeMarco will take Malay's spot on the roster. Malay returned to Texas on Wednesday to complete his degree at the University of the Incarnate Word, but plans to return next season. Malay hit .231 with six RBI in 39 games.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 19th season. Advertising and ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Fans can also visit www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
