Wednesday, August 3 - 7:05 p.m. CT
GCS Ballpark - Sauget, IL
Game #67 - Road Game #35 (38-28, 19-15)
RHP #39 TOMMY MENDOZA (3-1, 4.15 ERA) vs. RHP #36 SEAN TOLER (0-1, 3.60 ERA)
Last Time Out.
Andrew Moss went seven shutout innings as the Joliet Slammers knocked off the Gateway Grizzlies by a final score of 8-3 Tuesday night. The Slammers scored the first six runs of the game but it took until the sixth inning for them to get on the board. Brad Netzel got things going with a double down the left field line. Hector Pellot executed a beautiful bunt and a throwing error by first baseman Logan Parker allowed Netzel to score and Pellot to end up on second base. One out later birthday boy Sean Estand doubled in Pellot to give the Slammers a 2-0 edge. Reid Chenworth singled Estand home and Joliet had a 3-0 lead. Josh Flores smacked a solo home run for his sixth of the season to make the score 4-0 in the seventh. A bases loaded walk to Fox, a Pellot RBI triple in the 8th, and RBI hits from Chenworth and Fox in the 9th completed the scoring for Joliet as they won their 4th road game in a row.
For Starters.
Tommy Mendoza is coming off his longest, and one of his best, performances of the season as he went seven innings, scattering five hits and giving up two runs as he got the win in an 8-2 victory over the Lake Erie Crushers on July 28. Mendoza was a 5th round draft pick of the Angels in 2005. He has a career ERA of 3.97 over six minor league seasons. The right-handed pitcher rose to the Triple-A level at the age of 21 in 2009. He was 7-7 with a 3.36 ERA for Double-A Arkansas and was named a Texas League All Star before earning the promotion to Salt Lake. With the Bees he went 2-1 with a 2.91 ERA. Mendoza suffered from multiple injuries in 2010 which only allowed him to pitch in 10 games. He spent of the off-season rehabbing a partially torn labrum.
Comeback kids.
More than half the Slammers' wins (21 out of 38) have been in comeback fashion this year. The biggest deficit they've battled back to win from is five runs.
#Winning.
The Slammers are a season high 3.5 games up in the East Division. They've held first place by themselves since the end of play on July 8th. Before then they had not held first place by themselves all year. The Slammers have matched their season high of 10 games over .500. With a victory today the Slammers would match their longest winning streak of the year at three games.
Road Warriors.
The Slammers have won four of their last five series on the road. In addition, they've swept two of those series as they swept Normal right before the All-Star break and Lake Erie July 27-29. Joliet's record of 19-15 on the road is the best in the East Division and third best in the Frontier League.
Clutch hitters.
David Fox (.429 in 42 AB's) and Brad Netzel (.375 in 56 AB's) lead the team in batting average with runners in scoring position. As a team the Slammers are hitting .274 with runners in scoring position.
Aggression.
Joliet's hitters like to swing the bat as evidenced by their league low 221 walks.
Pitching is the key.
The Slammers have the lowest ERA in East Division at 3.65. In addition, they've held opponents to a league low .238 batting average. The bullpen has been especially strong, compiling an ERA of 2.88.
Leading after six.
The Slammers are almost unbeatable with a record of 27-1 when leading after six innings.
The team triple crown.
Erik Lis leads the Slammers in batting average (.315), Home Runs (13) and RBI (55).
