Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis edged Iowa 5-4 Tuesday night at AutoZone Park.
Rico Washington led the way for the Redbirds driving in four runs and going 3-for-3. Washington drove in the team's first run in the first inning with a sacrifice fly and later hit a two-run homer in the third. He finished off his night with a run-scoring single in the fifth inning and added his third hit, a single, in the eighth inning. David Freese chipped in two hits of his own and scored twice for Memphis in the win. Tony Richie went 2-for-3 with a home run to lead the Cubs.
Memphis starter P.J. Walters earned the win with 5.2 innings of work. The right-hander gave up four runs on six hits for his ninth win of the season. Jason Motte nailed down his sixth save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Iowa starter Mike Burns was pegged with the loss after surrendering five runs, three earned, on six hits over five innings.
With the victory the Redbirds secured their first winning season since 2004 when the team went 73-71.
The Redbirds and Cubs play tomorrow night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Mitchell Boggs gets the nod for the home team with Iowa sending lefty Jason Stanford to the hill.
