Sidewinders Whitesell Named PCL Rookie of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Pacific Coast League today announced Josh Whitesell of the Tucson Sidewinders as the 2008 PCL Rookie of the Year, an honor annually chosen by the League's managers and media representatives in recognition of a player's outstanding achievement in his first year at the Triple-A level.
Whitesell is currently hitting .324 with 24 home runs, 33 doubles, and 102 RBI for the Sidewinders this season. The Durham, North Carolina native is in his first season with the Arizona Diamondbacks after spending the previous five seasons with the Washington Nationals. The 26-year-old played college baseball at Loyola Marymount and was drafted in the sixth round of the 2003 MLB draft by the Nationals.
Created in 1998 when the PCL expanded to 16 teams, previous PCL Rookies of the Year include Bobby Crosby with Sacramento, Felix Hernandez with Tacoma, and Howie Kendrick with Salt Lake.
Other players receiving votes for rookie of the year were Will Venable of Portland, Freddy Sandoval of Salt Lake, and Christian Colonel of Colorado Springs.
