Colorado Springs Uses Team Effort To Beat Tucson 9-5
August 26, 2008 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
Every starting position player had a hit Monday night as Colorado Springs defeated Tucson 9-5 in front of 1,903 fans at Security Service Field.
Cory Sullivan knocked his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot in the first inning that gave the home team a 2-1 lead that it would not relinquish.
Jon Herrera and Humberto Cota added home runs of his own. Herrera's blast, a solo shot to leadoff the third inning, was his first home run since hitting two home runs on opening night in Tucson.
Matt Miller went 4-for-4 on the night, including two doubles, and collected three RBI.
Sean Smith (6-5) picked up the win after tossing 6.2 innings of three-run baseball. The right hander calmed down after a shaky first inning that saw Tim Raines Jr belt out his 18th home run to lead off the game. Smith then gave up a hit to Phil Avlas before Justin Upton lined into a double play at first base. A walk followed by a hit batter gave the Sidewinders another scoring opportunity, but Smith made a great stab at Donnie Kelly's hard-hit groundball up the middle to end the threat.
Evan MacLane (7-8) allowed 11 hits in four innings. He gave up seven runs.
Upton provided a home run in the fifth inning, a solo blast.
The same two teams will play two games tomorrow. The first game will be a continuation of the August 14th suspended game and will resume with the Sidewinders leading 5-3 in the top of the fourth inning. Valerio De Los Santos (4-5, 4.99) will start the 4:05 MDT game against Emiliano Fruto. The second game will be a seven-inning affair that will begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first game. Franklin Morales (9-4, 5.36) will get the call against Esmerling Vasquez.
