Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - The Omaha Royals play their home finale this Thursday, August 28th, taking on the New Orleans Zephyrs at 7:05 p.m. It's Cox Communications Fan Appreciation Day and the Royals have a lot of fun festivities slated at Rosenblatt Stadium to thank the fans who made this one of the team's best seasons at the turnstiles and in the ballpark in recent memory.
As of Monday night, a total of 333,131 fans had attended Royals games in 62 home dates this season. On Sunday, the Royals surpassed last year's total of 326,627 fans, which occurred over 68 home dates. The team's current average crowd of 5,373 per game is its' highest mark since 2000, when it averaged 6,084 fans per game.
With three home games remaining, the Triple-A club is on pace to post the best total attendance since 2001, when 359,038 fans saw the Royals. The 2001 season also had 68 home dates, while the current season will be limited to 65 openings at most. So far in 2008, seven home dates have been lost to rain, cold, the threat of severe weather and a weather-related power outage at the ballpark.
The Royals will celebrate and thank their fans Thursday, by giving away a passel of prizes, including five trips to Great Wolf Lodge, Subway gift cards and many others. It also happens to be the final Thirsty Thursday of 2008, with $1 beer and Cokes, courtesy of 96.1 The Brew, Action 3 News and The City Weekly!
The season-long Hurl the Pearl promotion wraps up with a couple of presentations during the game. One of the nightly winners of the contest, presented by Nissan of Omaha and McDonald's, will be randomly drawn as the winner of a grand prize package including two Omaha Royals 2009 season tickets. Plus, the proceeds from the promotion - where fans purchase soft baseballs and try to throw them into a moving Nissan truck each home game - will be given to the Ronald McDonald House.
Werner Enterprises will donate $10 for every RBI the Royals collected at home - 310 RBI for a total of $3,100 through Monday night - to the local charity PlaySmart.
"We are excited with the direction of both our attendance and business metrics, due to our staff's dedication this year and great support of our fans," said Martie Cordaro, Royals General Manager. "We are eagerly anticipating the final three home games of the 2008 season and look forward to saying âthank you' to our fans this Thursday on Cox Communications Fan Appreciation Day."
Also on Thursday night, the inaugural Media Player Awards will be presented to the Royals who were voted by local media as Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year and Prospect of the Year. And a new Fan Favorite Player Award, selected by fans, will be presented. Royal Treasures, the team's gift shop, will have several one-day-only specials, including "buy one on-field game hat and get a selected hat free".
The party culminates with the live music of Big Bo and the Biscuit Eaters, presented by Two Fine Irishmen!
