Washington Wild Things News Release

Marion, Ill. - Joey Metropoulos drove in all three Southern Illinois runs and starting pitcher Joe Augustine struck out 10 batters in seven innings of work to lead the Miners to a 3-1 victory over the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, completing a three-game sweep.

The Wild Things have now dropped six straight games dating back to last Friday's series opener against Traverse City.

Metropoulos belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to give the Miners a 2-1 lead. The home run was his seventh of the season.

In the bottom of the fourth, Washington starting pitcher Zach Rosenbaum allowed a lead-off single to Brad Netzel before getting the next two batters out. But Rosenbaum walked the bases loaded with two outs, two of his eight walks in the game, and then hit Metropoulos with a pitch, giving him his third RBI of the game and giving Southern Illinois the 3-1 lead.

Washington's pitching combined for another good outing despite the loss. Rosenbaum scattered four hits over five innings and allowed just the three runs while striking out three. His 41 total walks on the season are the most on the Wild Things' pitching staff. Chris Bennett pitched the final three innings, surrendering just one hit and one walk.

Augustine became the first pitcher in the Frontier League to hit double-digit wins with his performance, going seven innings and allowing just a first-inning run on a Jon Kourie sacrifice fly in the game to improve to 10-3. He lowered his league-leading ERA to 2.14.

The Wild Things' five through nine batters were a combined 0-for-17 against Miners pitchers. Wilson Matos had two of Washington's five hits.

The Wild Things look to rebound at home when they return to CONSOL Energy Park Friday night to open a three-game set against the Normal Cornbelters at 7:05 p.m. Come out to the park in costume for a special Halloween evening, where the Wild Things will be wearing Halloween-themed jerseys that will be up for auction to fans. It's also Fireworks Friday, with a display by Zambelli fireworks to follow the game. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:55 p.m. on WJPA 95.3 FM. Tickets are available at the box office, on the team website or by calling 866-456-WILD.
