Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums battled from an early 4-0 deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, but the Gateway Grizzlies struck for a pair of extra inning runs, taking a 7-5 final.
Gateway would get on the board in the first inning on an RBI groundout from Logan Parker and would cross home three times in the second, two coming on a Donnie Ecker bloop single for a 4-0 Grizzlies lead.
After that, Kevin Reese would settle in for the Beach Bums retiring the next 11 batters in arrow before a double in the sixth. Reese was able to battle out of trouble in that inning as he got Landon Hernandez to groundout to shortstop with runners on second and third to end the threat.
The Beach Bums cracked the scoreboard in the sixth as they loaded up the bases for Chase Burch who lined a ringing double down the line in left to cut the lead for 4-2. With momentum on their side, Traverse City would score a run on an Andrew Marshall single in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3. With the bases loaded later in the inning, the Beach Bums tied the game at 4-4 on a Chris Engell groundout.
Gateway would come back and take the lead in the top of the eighth on a Hernandez single to go up 5-4. In this back and forth battle, the Beach Bums would respond next, needing until there were two outs in the bottom of the ninth to do it. With Paul Cruz standing on second as a pinch-runner after a C. J. Ziegler double, Jason Codiroli grounded a ball to third where Ecker fielded cleanly, but then threw the ball over the first baseman's head allowing Cruz to score to tie the game at 5-5.
The score would stay that way until the 11th when Gordie Gronkowski doubled off the wall in center with the bases loaded to bring home two Grizzlies runs.
Eric Gilliland (4-1) picked up the win pitching 2.1 innings in relief. Scott Mueller (2-4) took the loss for the Beach Bums
Offensively, Michael Diaz had three hits for the Beach Bums and Chris Engell chipped in with two as well as scoring a run.
The Beach Bums now take on the River City Rascals in a three game series starting with Senior Night and FANtastic Fireworks Friday sponsored by Priority Health at Wuerfel Park. Ryan Platt (7-3, 2.88) will start for TC against Tony Marsala (7-7, 4.00) for River City. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. For more information or tickets, call 943-0100 or log on to www.tcbeachbums.com.
