Miners Sweep Washington with 3-1 Win

MARION, Ill. -Southern Illinois completed a three-game sweep of Washington with a 3-1 win Thursday night at Rent One Park. Joe Augustine allowed one run and struck out 10 through seven innings as he became the league's first 10 game winner of 2010. Newcomer Erik Draxton retired both batters he faced and picked up his second save in as many nights. With the loss, Zach Rosenbaum's record dropped to 1-8 on the year. Joey Metropoulos gave the Miners a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer in the first inning. It was his seventh longball of the year. He drove in all three Miners runs on the night. With the win, Southern Illinois improved their league-leading record to 53-22.
For the third time in the past three games, the Wild Things scored a single run in the first inning, but Washington trailed the rest of the way after Metropoulos' home run. Metropoulos drove in an insurance run in the fourth after he was struck by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Miners ace Joe Augustine was once again solid, going seven strong innings. He allowed one run on three hits in the first inning and then did not allow a hit for his final six inning of work. He amped his league-leading strikeout total to 113 with his 10 strikeouts against Washington. It was the fifth time this season Augustine hit double digits in strikeouts as he lowered his ERA to 2.05. Augustine leads the league in wins, ERA and strikeouts.
Washington starter Zach Rosenbaum went five innings and allowed three runs off four hits. However, he walked eight Miners and struck out four en route to his eighth loss of the season.
Friday the Miners welcome Lake Erie to Rent One Park for the first time this season. It will be a 7:05 p.m. first pitch with Miners starter Erik Sommerville (1-1, 4.09) on the mound against Lake Erie righty Matthew Smith (7-6, 4.19). The Miners will be looking to extend their three-game winning streak.
