Washington Comes Up with Victory at Champion Window Field

Florence, KY - The Washington Wild Things (32-31), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, came from behind to beat the Florence Freedom 4-3 in a nail biter at Champion Window Field in Florence Kentucky Friday night.

The contest in this game was among the pitching personnel. During the first seven innings batsman on both sides came up with only seven hits. Florence's Preston Vancil threw 138 pitches in seven plus innings, allowing only two runs (one earned) on three hits, striking out nine Washington batters. Washington's starting pitcher Zach Groh allowed two runs on three hits, striking out four in six innings.

Florence got on the board with two runs in the first inning, and Washington came up with a pair in the fourth, when Jacob Dempsey drove in a run (Ernie Banks) and scored.

There was no more scoring until the bottom of the eighth when Billy Mottram smacked a solo homerun to give Florence the lead.

In the ninth inning Washington took the lead when Chris Sidick drove in Josh Blackstock and Jacob Dempsey hit a sacrifice fly to plate Michael Parker.

Justin Edwards (3-3) earned the victory for Washington, pitching two innings in relief. Nick Peterson chalked up his tenth save of the season.

Washington travels from Kentucky to Ypsilanti, Michigan to face the Midwest Sliders for a three game set, starting Saturday when first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Air time on WJPA 95.3 F.M. is 6:55 p.m. The Wild Things return to CONSOL Energy Park Tuesday for a six game set.
