Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, IL-Mark Brackman pitched eight strong innings and Brandon Johnson broke an eighth inning tie with a long home run to lead the Gateway Grizzlies to a 5-3 win over the Windy City Thunderbolts Friday night in front of 4,634 at GCS Ballpark. The Grizzlies avoided a three-game sweep with Friday's win.
Johnson connected on a 1-1 pitch from Matt Jernstad for his 11th home run of the year, a two-run shot, that carried the score board wall in right field. The shot came with two outs in the eighth inning. It was Johnson's only hit of the night. He finished 1-4.
Windy City (36-27) tied the game at three in the top of the eighth inning when Gilberto Mejia doubled with two outs to score Wilson Matos, who had doubled to start the inning. It was the second RBI of the game for Mejia, who singled to drive in a run in the third to put Windy City in front 1-0. Pete Paris homered leading off the top of the fifth to put the Thunderbolts on top 2-0.
The Grizzlies (26-36) took a 3-2 lead with a three-run fifth inning. Jareck West singled to drive in a pair of runs. Joseph Scaperotta, who reached on a two-out error to extend the inning, scored on a wild pitch that put the Grizzlies on top 3-2. West finished 2-4. Alex Kerins was 2-3 for the Grizzlies.
Mark Brackman (4-7) tossed eight innings for the win. Brackman allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits. He stuck out four. Joel Boeschen picked up his fifth save of the year, striking out two in the ninth.
The Grizzlies now hit the road for a six-game trip to Southern Illinois and Windy City. Gateway plays 12 of their next 15 games away from GCS Ballpark. First pitch Saturday night in Marion, Ill. is 7:05 pm.
