Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums used "The Force" to walk off with a 1-0 win over the Lake Erie Crushers in an 11-inning pitcher's duel on Star Wars Night at Wuerfel Park in front of 5,137 fans and take two of three from the second place team in the East Division.

Andrew Stafford was the hero in the 11th against Lake Erie closer Jacinto Gonell (2-3), who took the loss. Brandon McArthur led off the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch as Brad Miller was attempting to bunt. Miller got down the bunt to move McArthur to third, and Stafford lined an 0-2 pitch down the first base line for the win.

Both teams had several opportunities in the contest in extra innings and early in the game. David Dinelli started for the Beach Bums and threw 5.1 shutout innings. He walked five and struck out six in the no-decision. Dinelli had two on with one out in the first, and runners at second and third with two outs in the fourth but escaped each time. B.J. Hagen threw 3.2 innings of perfect relief, leaving runners at first and third in the sixth.

Traverse City had runners in scoring position in three of the first four innings but came up empty against Lake Erie starter Cardoza Tucker. Tucker tossed seven shutout innings, walking three and striking out one.

In extra innings, Lake Erie had golden opportunities against Shawn Joy. The Crushers loaded the bases with one out in the 10th as Arden McWilliams singled, Wayne Bond reached when the Beach Bums attempted to record the out on McWilliams at second, and Jodem Rivera was intentionally walked after a sacrifice bunt to load the bases. Joy got Drew Saylor to bounce back to him and struck out Andrew Davis to end the frame. The Crushers had runners at second and third in the 11th but came up empty again.

Shawn Joy recorded the win, throwing two scoreless frames to improve to 4-0. The Beach Bums had just five hits in the contest, but Andrew Barbaro had two of those, finishing 2-for-3.

The Beach Bums will welcome the Florence Freedom to Wuerfel Park tomorrow evening for a 7:05pm game. RHP David Nathanson (3-8, 4.20) takes the ball for the Beach Bums against Florence's RHP Everett Saul (9-3, 5.69). It will be Paint the Park Pink Night in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Wear your pink to the park. A 3K walk will take place to benefit breast cancer awareness at 4pm.
