Warthogs Snap Skid With a 4-3 Win Over Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Winston-Salem fought off a late Myrtle Beach rally to claim a 4-3 victory and snap their four-game losing streak on Wednesday afternoon at BB&T Coastal Field. The Warthogs utilized a stellar start from Jacob Rasner and averted collapse in the ninth inning to avoid being swept in the three-game series.

Winston-Salem took a 4-1 lead into the ninth inning, but the Pelicans plated two runs off Warthogs closer Israel Chirino and had the tying run at third base with two outs. Chirino induced an infield fly from Travis Jones to secure the win and claim his first save of the season.

The Warthogs took an early lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. John Shelby III singled to start the inning and moved to second base when Lee Cruz walked. Francisco Hernandez, who was just 1-for-13 entering the game, drilled the first offering from Kyle Cofield off the base of the right field wall for a two-run double.

The Pelicans cut their deficit in half with a run in the fifth inning. With two outs and the bases empty, Yohan Silva lined a single under the glove of Warthogs shortstop Sergio Miranda. Gorkys Hernandez followed by dropping an RBI double inside the right field line to score Silva and cut the Warthogs advantage to 2-1.

In the sixth inning, the Warthogs added two insurance runs off Pelicans reliver Carlos Sencion to extend their lead to 4-1. Hernandez, who finished 2-for-3 with a walk and 2 RBI, walked and moved to third on an infield single and an error on a ball hit by Sergio Mirando. A balk by Sencion scored Hernandez with the Warthogs third run. After Miranda was caught trying to steal third, Paulo Orlando tripled and scored on a two-out RBI single by C.J. Lang.

Rasner (1-0) was stellar in tossing six innings and limiting the Pelicans to one run on four hits with three strikeouts to earn the win. It was the first win for a Warthogs starting pitcher this season. Myrtle Beach starting pitcher Kyle Cofield (0-2) battled thru six innings and only surrendered two runs on four hits, but took the loss.

At the conclusion of today's game, the Warthogs will return to Winston-Salem for a seven game home stand beginning Thursday with a four-game series against the reigning Carolina League champion Frederick Keys. First pitch is scheduled for 7 PM. Following the series against the Keys, the Warthogs will welcome the Potomac Nationals to Ernie Shore Field for a three-game series.
