Warthogs Avoid Sweep, Take Series Finale 4-3

Myrtle Beach, SC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans failed to pull off their first sweep of the season as the Warthogs took the series finale 4-3. Trailing by three runs in the ninth inning, the Pelicans nearly put together a miraculous comeback but wound up leaving the tying run stranded at third base.

BB&T Coastal Field was flooded with school-aged children as part of School Kids Day. The Pelicans handed out baseball related educational activity books and had other fun activities set up for the children.

The Warthogs grabbed the lead in the top of the second on a two run double to deep right field by Brandon Allen. His rocket shot off Pelicans starter Kyle Cofield scored Salvador Sanchez and Lee Cruz.

Although Cofield picked up the loss, he was stellar in five of his six innings on the mound. His only spotty inning came in the second when surrendered two runs. Cofield only allowed the Warthogs four hits over the course of six innings.

The Pelicans inched within one run in the bottom half of the fifth. Recently promoted center fielder Yohan Silva hit a two out single. Then, Gorkys Hernandez lofted a ball down the right field line that neither first basemen Brandon Allen nor right fielder Salvador Sanchez could handle. Silva, who was off on the crack of the bat, scored all the way from first.

The Warthogs added two more runs in the seventh against Pelicans reliever Carlos Sencion. With runners aboard at first and third, Sencion was called for a balk on a pickoff move to first base that allowed Francisco Hernandez to score. Later in the inning, C.J. Lang hit an RBI single that scored Paulo Orlando, who tripled in his at-bat.

The Pelicans managed to rally in the ninth inning behind two big hits by Yohan Silva and Gorkys Hernandez. First, Jon Mark Owings reached on an error. After advancing to second on a ground out by Lundahl, Owings scored on an RBI single to left field. Hernandez followed by smacking a triple into the right center field gap that made it easy for Silva to motor around the bases to cut the led to 4-3. With the tying run at third base and two outs, Travis Jones popped up the first pitch he saw in foul ground to third baseman C.J. Retherford that ended the game.

Even with the loss, the Pelicans still picked up their second series win of the season. They will remain in second place in the Southern division behind the Salem Avalanche.

The Pelicans hit the road for a four game series against the Kinston Indians starting on Thursday, April 17th at 7:00 p.m. Bruce Dal Canton will send Ryne Reynoso to the mound to start the series. He will be opposed by right handed pitcher Steven Wright.
