Lowrie Makes Big League Debut with Red Sox

Cleveland, OH - Former Wilmington Blue Rocks shortstop Jed Lowrie (2006) became the 92nd former Riverfront resident to make it to the major leagues last night, debuting as a third baseman and eight-hole hitter for the Boston Red Sox. Lowrie went 1-for-4 with three RBIs, twice knocking home his former Blue Rocks teammate and roommate Jacoby Ellsbury (2006) in a 5-3 win over the Cleveland Indians. Lowrie singled in the seventh inning off former Kinston Indian Rafael Perez for his first big league hit.
"I can't even describe it," Lowrie told the Associated Press of standing on the first base bag. "It's one of those moments in your life you are always going to remember."
Lowrie fought through an early-season high ankle sprain to hit .262 over 96 games with the Blue Rocks in 2006. The former Stanford University star clubbed 21 doubles, three triples and six home runs for the Blue Crew that season, knocking home 50 runs and scoring 43. He split last season with Double-A Portland (EL) and Triple-A Pawtucket (IL). Lowrie started this season with Pawtucket, appearing in eight games for the PawSox before getting called up to join the big club.
Five former Blue Rocks that called Frawley Stadium home while Red Sox minor leaguers have made the major leagues. In addition to Lowrie and Ellsbury, former Boston farmhands Clay Buchholz (2006), Luis Mendoza (2005, 06) and Anibal Sanchez (2005) made the journey from Wilmington to the major leagues.
