Warthogs Fall 11-4 to Wilmington
June 10, 2006 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - The Wilmington Blue Rocks, who currently have the worst team batting average in the Carolina League, totaled 14 hits and 11 runs in their 11-4 victory over Winston-Salem in front of 1,964 fans at Ernie Shore Field. The Warthogs, who won the first two games of this four game series, were doomed by poor pitching and sloppy defense on their way to the lopsided loss.
Warthogs starter Jack Egbert (5-4) only lasted two innings, allowing five runs on four hits and walked two. Only one of Egbert's runs was earned in his shortest outing of the year. After retiring the first six batters, the game unraveled for Egbert in the third inning. The Blue Rocks scored five runs in the inning on four hits, two walks, a wild pitch and two Warthogs errors to take a 5-0 lead.
The Warthogs rallied in the sixth inning after Wilmington pushed their lead to 7-1. Winston-Salem scored three runs to cut the Blue Rocks lead to 7-4, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Josh Hansen, who finished the night 2-for-4 with two RBI. The Blue Rocks closed the door in the ninth inning by adding four runs to make the score 11-4. Mickey Hall cleared the bases with a triple that scored three runs and ended any hopes of a Warthogs rally in the ninth.
Gary Galvez (3-2) pitched five innings and allowed four runs on six hits to earn the victory for Wilmington. Jacoby Ellsbury finished the night 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Blue Rocks. Bryan Pritz added three hits for Wilmington, who will look to split the series with the Warthogs in the final game on Sunday at 5 PM. Taking the mound for the Warthogs will be RHP Michael Moat (2-2, 2.30) and he will be opposed by Wilmington LHP Tommy Hottovy (4-5, 3.39).
