Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Wilmington Blue Rocks left a season-high 14 men on base, including eight in scoring position, in dropping a 2-1 game to the Winston- Salem Warthogs at Ernie Shore Field on Friday night. For the second straight night the Rocks failed to hold an early 1-0 lead. The Rocks loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, down 2-1. Andrew Pinckney slammed a comeback liner off the glove of closer Fernando Hernandez that ricocheted onto the infield grass in front of second base. Shortstop Victor Mercedes charged, fielded with his bare hand and made a brilliant throw to first just in time to seal the game. Wilmington took the early lead after loading the bases with one out in the second inning. Mickey Hall came to the plate and lifted an RBI sac fly to right field, scoring John Otness from third base. However, the Rocks would not score again in the game. They lost the lead in the fourth. Starter Luis Mendoza (5-4) had retired nine straight batters before Victor Mercedes, first-pitch swinging, connected for a double to right. Two batters later, Chris Kelly drove in his 39th run of the season with a single to tie the game, 1-1. The Warthogs took the lead the very next inning with some more double trouble. Aone-out double by Juan De Los Santos and an RBI single by Chris Amador made it a 2-1 game in favor of Winston-Salem. Wilmington threatened numerous times, but left runners on base in eight of their nine innings. Mendoza went seven innings allowing just two runs on six hits and no walks while striking out three to take his fourth loss of the season.
HEY NOW, YOU'RE AN ALL-STAR: Before the game, the Carolina League announced its 2006 All-Star team. Third baseman Andrew Pinckney and closer Mike James of the Blue Rocks made the squad. The 2006 Carolina League vs. California League All-Star Game will be played on Tuesday, June 27 in Salem, VA at Salem Memorial Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m.
LINEUP SHUFFLE: Last night the Blue Rocks lineup shuffled, moving shortstop Jed Lowrie back into the number-three hole. Lowrie had started 22 games as the three-hole hitter before his high ankle sprain in early May, and had hit fifth in the order since his return before last night. The shuffle also included first baseman Ian Bladergroen hitting seventh in the order for the first time this season. Bladergroen had never hit lower than sixth in the order previously. Likewise, corner infielder Scott White moved down to eighth in the lineup for the first time this season. White had never hit lower than seventh this season.
POTENTIAL LOST: Wilmington left 14 men on base in last night's loss, the most for the Rocks in any game all season. The previous high was 11 men left on base in a 10-1 win at Myrtle Beach on April 9. Eight of the 14 men left on base last night stood in scoring position.
HARD TIMES: Wilmington has now lost four games in a row, seven of their last eight, nine of their last 11 and 12 of their last 15. The Rocks are now a season-worst eight games below .500 on the season.
GETTIN' ON: Back at second base last night, Jeff Natale reached base twice by walk. The former two-sport star at Trinity College has reached base safely in all of his 10 games as a Blue Rock with a hit or a walk.
