TONIGHT'S GAME: The Hillcats continue their final home series of the first half with the third of four games against their Central Virginia rival, the Salem Avalanche...Last night, Salem overcame a four-run deficit in defeating Lynchburg 5-4...With the loss, the Potomac Nationals moved into sole possession of first place in the Northern Division by sweeping a doubleheader from the Frederick Keys...
FIRST HALF RACE: The Cats are one-half game out of first place entering play tonight... Currently, every team in the division posts a losing record...The only time a team advanced to the CL post-season without an above .500 record was in 1985...The Winston-Salem Spirits captured the Southern Division first-half crown with a record of 35-35...Lynchburg is in the midst of playing 15 of their last 19 games in the first half on the road...They are 5-5 to begin that stretch...In addition, all 19 games are against Southern Division squads...
REHAB START: Pittsburgh Pirates RHP Kip Wells (see page 6) is scheduled to make a rehab start for the Lynchburg Hillcats tonight...Wells has been out since late-February, when he was diagnosed with a circulatory condition in his throwing arm...He had corrective surgery in early March...The 29-year old Wells is in his fifth season in the Pirates system after being acquired in a trade from the Chicago (AL) in 2001...The last major leaguer to rehab with the Hillcats was RHP Ryan Vogelsong in 2002...He made 4 appearances with the Cats, posting a 1-1 record and an 8.04 ERA in 4 starts....
TONIGHT'S OPPONENT: Ronnie Martinez, 22, is a 5-11, 205-pound right-hander signed by Houston as a non-drafted free agent in 2001. The Dominican Republic native excelled with Lexington (A, SAL) in 2005, posting a 13-3 record with a 3.67 ERA (152.0 ip, 142 h, 73 r, 62 er, 50 bb, 113 k). He tied for the South Atlantic League in wins last season. The year prior, Martinez was named NY-Penn League Post-Season All-Star, NY-Penn League MVP and Topps NY-Penn League Player of the Year. Entering 2006, he has a career mark of 36-10 in four professional seasons within the Houston organization.
