Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick, MD -- It took 13-innings, but the Keys clawed back from a four-run deficit to end an eight-game home losing streak, defeating the Potomac Nationals 6-5 in on Saturday night.
Jarod Rine led off the 13th inning with a single, moved to second on Jake Duncan's sacrifice bunt, to third on a wild pitch and then scored on Travis Brown's RBI single to centerfield to win just their second game of the year when trailing after the seventh inning.
The Keys' bullpen was the story of the game, combining to toss 8.0 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out 8. Rommie Lewis and Tony Neal each tossed three scoreless innings, before Casey Cahill (4-1) came on to toss two scoreless innings to earn the win.
The Nationals' Luke Montz put the Keys behind early with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning, giving Potomac a 2-0 lead. The would extend the lead to three when Reggie Fitzpatrick came around to score on on Ian Desmond's ground out to Travis Brown in the third inning.
With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning Pete Maestrales hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Brown. But that was all the Keys could manage in that situation.
A Trey Webb double and Marvin Lowrance's single each drove in runs in the top of the fourth inning for Potomac, despite Kevin Hart setting a Keys' record, striking out four batters in the inning.
The score did not change until the bottom of the eighth inning. With Jason Fransz at first base and Pete Maestrales at second, Dustin Yount, who has hit .292 with runners on base, among the team leaders in the category, crushed the Thomas Wilson offering over the right field wall for a three-run home run, bringing the Keys within a run.
Jake Duncan doubled down the right field line in the bottom of the ninth inning to get the Keys offense started. Duncan would later score on a wild pitch from Juan Ovalles to tie the score. The Keys would get runners on second and third base, but Ovalles struck out Morgan Clendenin to end the threat and send the game into extra innings.
Four innings later Brown lined a single to centerfield to score Rine to give the Keys the win.
Brent Nyquist (0-1) allowed the run in 1.1 innings of relief to take the loss. Before Nyquist, Juan Ovalles allowed just a run in 3.1 innings.
The Keys and Nationals will play the final game of their series on Sunday at 2:00 PM. RHP Luis Ramirez will take the mound for the Keys on Sunday Family Fun Day presented by The Washington Post.
