Warriors Stop the Charge

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -The NBA D-League Champion Santa Cruz Warriors (8-4) defeated the Canton Charge (3-8) 108-101 Tuesday night at Kaiser Permanente Arena.

All five starters for the Warriors would end the night with double-digit point totals. Elliot Williams paced Santa Cruz with 29 points and 9 assists. Darington Hobson (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Ronnie Brewer (18 points, 12 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles.

Nick Minnerath paced the Charge with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Jorge Gutierrez posted 19 points while Joe Harris added 15 points.

Both teams exchanged buckets to start the game until Canton went on a 16-6 run to take a 23-13 lead with 6:16 left in the first quarter. Santa Cruz would come out of the timeout on a 15-6 run to end the first quarter down by 1 point.

Neither team would pull away in the opening minutes of the second quarter. The Charge would go on an 8-0 run with 2:49 left in the half to push its lead to 7 points. Santa Cruz closed the half on a 6-0 run to enter the break trailing 51-50.

The Warriors would come out of the locker room on a 21-4 run to take a 71-55 lead with 5:03 left in the third quarter. Canton would respond with a 17-8 run to close out the quarter at a seven-point deficit.

The final frame was a closely contested battle that saw four lead changes and six ties. Darington Hobson would hit the dagger three-point shot with 40.3 seconds left in the game to put the Warriors up 101-97. Santa Cruz would never relinquish the advantage, taking the 108-101 win over the Canton Charge.
