Warriors Play Host to Broncos for Hockey Fights Cancer Night

November 18, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

The Moose Jaw Warriors will be turning the Hangar purple on Friday night when they host the Swift Current Broncos.

The team is hosting it's third annual Hockey Fights Cancer Night, honouring everyone who has been touched by cancer and raising funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.

"It doesn't matter if you look at your own family or you talk to any player, somebody has been affected by cancer," Warriors head coach Mark O'Leary said. "Tonight is an opportunity to think about those loved ones."

Moose Jaw will be sporting special edition purple jerseys, which will be auctioned off in a silent auction at the game.

Warriors captain Denton Mateychuk said it's a special night for the players to honour loved ones and the community.

"There's a lot of guys who have been affected by it in the league and on our team, so it's huge," he said.

On the ice, the Warriors will be looking to snap a two-game slide after falling 2-1 to the Prince Albert Raiders on Tuesday night.

O'Leary said the team needs to tighten up it's game going into a home-and-home set with the Broncos.

"It's our checking, for the last two-three games, we've been a little bit loose in that area," he said. "Stick on puck and finish on top of our man, that's the competitive side of the game and right now, we're looking for things to be a little easier than they're going to be."

Tuesday's game saw the Warriors fall down 2-0 to the Raiders, but finish strong and hold Prince Albert without a shot in the third as they pressed to tie the game.

Mateychuk said getting back on track starts with playing a complete game.

"Need to play a full 60," he said. "We gave them pretty much a whole first period and they took advantage... playing 40 minutes isn't enough."

This weekend's two-game set marks the first time in the regular season that the Warriors have squared off with the Broncos, who enter with a 9-9-0-0 record this season.

O'Leary said the Warriors will need to be ready to go.

"They have a deep group, they have a bunch of guys that play hard, they're on you in a hurry and they have skill to make plays," he said. "It will be a tough matchup for us, but it's a good one at a good time."

The Warriors will receive a boost for this weekend's games as 20-year-old forward Ryder Korczak is expected to make his season debut. Click here to read more.
