Warriors Looking for Rebound against Oil Kings
November 8, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
Saturday's loss to Red Deer was a case of lessons learned for the Moose Jaw Warriors.
Moose Jaw held a 2-1 lead heading into the third period, but gave up three goals in the final frame to fall to the undefeated Rebels.
"We weren't really happy about losing against Red Deer, going into the third period having the lead, you have to find a way to keep it," Warriors forward Eric Alarie said.
The Warriors gave the Rebels four straight power plays in the second period and that swung momentum in their favour.
Warriors assistant coach Scott King said playing disciplined against good teams is key.
"You keep letting them hang around and you're taking penalties and all of a sudden, you have to lean on your top guys a lot, they play extra minutes, you can't get other guys into the game and it just takes away from the flow," he said.
"Lesson learned and we'll turn the page."
The Warriors will now look to rebound when they welcome in the Edmonton Oil Kings to the Moose Jaw Events Centre on Tuesday night.
It's the first time this season that the Warriors will square off with the defending WHL Champions, who are off to a 2-12-1-0 start to the season.
While the Oil Kings might not be the powerhouse that captured the league title last season, King said they will test the Warriors.
"Edmonton is a good young team and anybody can beat anybody any night in this league, so we have to make sure we come ready to go and we can't take shortcuts," King said.
"We expect them to come out and push us and be physical and try to make it hard on our skill guys, so we have to come with the mentality to get on them early and just stay on them."
Alarie said the Warriors need to stick to their game.
"We know if we get the puck deep and control the blue lines, that's the big thing for us," he said. "If we manage our turnovers at the blue line and get it deep, I'm pretty confident that we can win this game."
The Warriors and Oil Kings face-off at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night.
