Warriors Host Hurricanes for Big Showdown Tuesday
February 21, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
In the midst of their first three-game losing skid of the season, the Moose Jaw Warriors are hungry heading into a big game against the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Tuesday night.
"It's exciting, I don't think there's a better team for us to come out of this little funk," Warriors head coach Mark O'Leary said. "It's no secret where we are in the standings and the importance of tonight's game."
Moose Jaw sits just three points clear of Lethbridge for fourth place in the Eastern Conference.
The Warriors lead the season series 2-1, but the Hurricanes came out on top in their previous meeting at the start of February, winning 4-1 in Lethbridge.
"We've got to come out flying, playing some physical game, like Lethbridge does, and we've got to keep rolling throughout the whole game," Warriors forward Josh Hoekstra said.
The Warriors are coming off a 5-2 loss in Prince Albert on Saturday.
O'Leary said the team needs to focus on its execution to get back into the win column.
"Our play without the puck, we're keeping scoring chances down fairly low, but overall it's executing, especially in big moments, whether that's on the power play, a simple exit leaving our zone or when we have a scoring chance in the offensive zone, just executing those simple details," he said.
The Hurricanes are a team that limits scoring opportunities for their opponents and plays a tight defensive game.
Hoekstra said the Warriors need to play opportunistic to have success.
"Whenever we have a chance to shoot, we got to shoot and we have to crash the net, create chances," he said. "They've got a strong goaltender and if we just keep shooting, we'll get some goals."
Coming off two losses last weekend, the Warriors will be focused on starting strong.
"We've lost a few in a row and sometimes confidence gets a little bit lower, so if we can get something good happening early on and roll from there, that will be beneficial," O'Leary said.
The Warriors and Hurricanes go toe-to-toe on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.
If you can't make it out to the game, tune in live on WHL Live and Country 100, starting with the IKS Media Warriors Live Pre-Game Show at 6:45 p.m. on Twitter, YouTube and Facebook.
